Don't pick it up yet. Its mother is most likely nearby. She won't come back while someone stands over it. Watch from far for an hour or two. Ask the watchman and shopkeepers: somebody may be feeding it already.

URGENT IS:

Hurt, bleeding, can't stand, or in danger right now (a road, a drain, dogs). Try the numbers below. We have been told many might not ring, or nobody picks up. Often the person who found the cat is its best chance. Indies are tough, and many people here go out of their way.

A newborn with no mother (eyes shut, can't walk). It can't pee or poo on its own and won't survive without her. Look for her first. She is almost always close.

Getting a stray cat neutered

By neuter we mean boys and girls. We don't know of anywhere in Pune that does it free for every cat. We pay a vet ourselves.

Blue Cross, Mundhwa: stray cats for about ₹1,000, with 7 days' care after. Book by email and expect a wait.
Project Mau, with Animal Rescue Trust (search "Project Mau" on Instagram): free for cats in low-income areas, low-cost for housing societies. As far as we know, one kind person pays for it from their own pocket, so please keep it for the cats who need it.
Canine Control & Care in Bavdhan does dogs only.

A girl needs one to two weeks of rest after, longer than most places keep her. We keep ours at home for it.

Cat blood donors

Raintree Vet, Ghorpadi, puts out a call when a cat needs blood. If your cat is 1 to 8 years old with vaccines up to date, follow @raintreevet and answer the next call.

Legal help

Feeders do get harassed, in housing societies and on the street. Feeding community animals is legal. For dogs, since August 2025, the Supreme Court allows it only at designated spots.

Moving, and can't take your cat? There is nowhere in Pune to surrender a cat, us included. Take it with you if you can. Cats can go by train. In First AC or First Class you ask for a coupe and the railway decides; a kitten in a basket can go in any class for a booking charge (the railway's rules). I brought my two elderly cats from Canada to India during the pandemic. It was a lot of stress and work, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it's possible. Otherwise, ask family and friends, and start early: it's rare to get calls for cats older than 4 months.
